LOVE, DEATH & CANADIAN HISTORY

REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

The course began on July 20, but recordings of each lecture are posted online and will remain availble for the forseeable future so you can catch up whenever you like!

Canadian history is much more than dry lists of dates and events. It's filled with gripping tales from the lives of historical figures who were people much like us — who fell in love, suffered broken hearts, were fascinated by death and devastated by loss. Those stories of love and death have a lot to teach us about our country. In this ten-week online course, we'll explore the history of this place from time immemorial to the recent past, uncovering torrid affairs and shocking scandals, duels, murders and executions. And we'll discover the ways in which those passionate and morbid tales have shaped the country we live in.

Explore the history of the city with the host of the award-winning Canadiana documentary series, author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love, and recipient of an honourable mention for a Governor General's History Award.

Format: This course will include ten weekly lectures on Zoom with a chance to interact and ask questions, as well as a list of recommended readings & viewings. Each week's lecture will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Every lecture will also be available to stream online later for anyone who can't make that week's class.

Dates: July 20 to September 21, 2023.

Time: 8pm every Thursday night (Eastern time).

Format: Each week's lecture will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
